Good news. A once a week diabetes injection

Byetta (exenatide )has been placed in microspheres . This allows one of my favorite diabetes medications to be given once each week rather than twice daily. The initial studies found better weight loss and greater reduction in A1c compared to the twice daily Byetta.  The name of this slow release form of exenatide is
Bydureon.

Exenatide is a GLP-1 agonist . What does GLP-1 agonist mean ?  Why is this a better choice than insulin or a sulfonylurea medication .                 More on that tomorrow.

Glucophage is considered to be the first choice of medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. I believe that Bydureon could be second except for one thing COST.

Why should we chose GLP-1 agonist despite the higher initial cost  ?

More tomorrow.
